What is Fast Forward?

Fast Forward was co-founded in 1996 by four renowned scientists’ Michael Merzenich, Paula Talla, William Jenkins, and Steven Miller.

Fast Forward is an oral language and reading intervention program that addresses memory, attention, processing speed, and sequencing skills by using a 3-part model that includes foundational language and cognitive skill building, deliberate practice, and real -time corrective feed-back. Research studies of students using Fast Forward showed gains un executive function, language and reading skills.

Fast Forward is a series of fun-filled computer exercises developed by brain scientists to boost the brains’ processing efficiency and accelerate learning. Designed for individuals 4 and up. The software series begins with foundational programs that build reading and language skills, while improving memory, attention, processing speed, and sequencing. (Fast Forward sample center)

Children on the Autism Spectrum and CAPD

Children on the Autism Spectrum can also have Central Auditory Processing. (CAPD). Symptoms of CAPD include difficulty understanding speech, following directions, and distinguishing between similar sounds.

Research has shown that Fast forward can improve auditory processing in children with Central Auditory Processing disorder. Children with CAPD are thought to hear normally, but their brains prevent them from properly interpreting sounds, especially speech. Fast Forward is designed to treat CAPD and other neuroprocessing impairments by helping the brain reorganize itself and form new neural connections. Since aspects of our brains are changeable or “plastic” auditory neural pathways and synapses in the brain change because of the sensory input of consistent training. In the Fast Forward Foundations program, the speech sounds, words, and sentences used in the games have been acoustically altered to stretch and emphasize the rapidly changing phonetic elements within natural speech. Users must discriminate between paired sounds, syllables or words, such as choosing which sound rose or dropped in pitch or which picture represents the word they just heard, when presented with words that sound very much alike. This helps retrain the sound representation in the brain and improves processing speed. Exercises adapt to each child’s performance providing precise and efficient training optimized for everyone’s needs. Fast Forward delivers personalized, intensive practice across a wide range of language and reading tasks to help children make rapid improvement. The improvement made continues even after the program is finished.
